What is hot oil massage?
Hot oil massage uses oil warmed to just above body temperature, applied generously and worked in with long, firm strokes. The heat relaxes the muscles before the pressure arrives, so the therapist can work more deeply than with cold oil while the session still feels soothing. Coconut, almond, sesame and olive oils are common, sometimes infused with herbs or essential oils.
It is particularly good for stiffness in cold weather, for dry skin, and for people who want firm work without the intensity of deep tissue. Many therapists combine it with acupressure on the back, shoulders and feet, and with scalp massage, where warm oil is a traditional treatment in its own right.
Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. The oil is heated on the spot, so it is offered as a mobile treatment by many therapists as well as at studios. Expect to feel soft-skinned and sleepy afterwards; it is a good evening booking.
