What is hot oil massage?
Hot oil massage uses oil warmed to just above body temperature, applied generously and worked in with long, firm strokes. The heat relaxes the muscles before the pressure arrives, so the therapist can work more deeply than with cold oil while the session still feels soothing. Coconut, almond, sesame and olive oils are common, sometimes infused with herbs or essential oils.
It is particularly good for stiffness in cold weather, for dry skin, and for people who want firm work without the intensity of deep tissue. Many therapists combine it with acupressure on the back, shoulders and feet, and with scalp massage, where warm oil is a traditional treatment in its own right.
Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. The oil is heated on the spot, so it is offered as a mobile treatment by many therapists as well as at studios. Expect to feel soft-skinned and sleepy afterwards; it is a good evening booking.

Where to find it in Birmingham
The NEC, the ICC and the airport hotels keep a steady demand for mobile treatments, and Solihull has become a sub-market of its own, with therapists who quote hotel visits as their default and whose availability tracks the exhibition schedule. The Jewellery Quarter has the longest-established independents, several in converted workshop units fitted out as proper treatment rooms, and it is the best area for remedial and sports work. Edgbaston is residential and quieter, favoured for longer afternoon treatments and for pregnancy massage, and Moseley has a strong holistic and aromatherapy presence.

Frequently asked questions
What oil is used in a hot oil massage?
Usually a plant oil such as coconut, sweet almond or sesame, sometimes with essential oils added. Tell the therapist about any nut allergies or skin sensitivities before the session.
How is hot oil massage different from hot stone?
Hot oil warms the tissue through the oil itself and works with hands only; hot stone uses heated basalt stones as tools and applies heat more locally. Hot oil feels more flowing, hot stone more penetrating.
How much does hot oil massage cost?
Comparable to Swedish massage, around £45 to £75 an hour, with mobile visits carrying a travel supplement.
