What is ayurvedic massage?
Ayurvedic massage comes from India's traditional medical system and is one part of a wider approach to health. The best known form, abhyanga, uses generous amounts of warm herbal oil chosen for your constitution (dosha), applied with long, rhythmic strokes over the whole body, often by a therapist working both sides in unison. The oil is left on for a while afterwards to absorb.
Other treatments listed under the same heading include shirodhara, in which warm oil is poured in a steady stream over the forehead, and marma massage, which works on vital points. All are slower and more oil-rich than Western massage and are designed to calm the nervous system, improve circulation and support sleep and digestion.
Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes and are almost always given at the therapist's own space because of the oil and the heating equipment. Expect to shower afterwards, or to travel home in old clothes. Ayurvedic therapists in the UK are often trained in India or Sri Lanka and describe their background on their profile.

Where to find it in Birmingham
The NEC, the ICC and the airport hotels keep a steady demand for mobile treatments, and Solihull has become a sub-market of its own, with therapists who quote hotel visits as their default and whose availability tracks the exhibition schedule. The Jewellery Quarter has the longest-established independents, several in converted workshop units fitted out as proper treatment rooms, and it is the best area for remedial and sports work. Edgbaston is residential and quieter, favoured for longer afternoon treatments and for pregnancy massage, and Moseley has a strong holistic and aromatherapy presence.

Frequently asked questions
What is a dosha and why does it matter for the massage?
Ayurveda describes three constitutional types: vata, pitta and kapha. The therapist assesses which dominates in you and chooses oils and pressure accordingly, such as warming sesame oil for vata or cooling coconut for pitta.
Will I be very oily afterwards?
Yes. Abhyanga uses far more oil than a Swedish massage and it is meant to absorb. Most therapists offer a shower or steam afterwards; if not, wear clothes you do not mind marking.
How much does Ayurvedic massage cost?
Around £55 to £95 for an hour, reflecting the oils and preparation involved. Shirodhara is often priced separately at £60 to £110.
