What is couples massage?

A couples massage is two treatments given at the same time in the same room, by two therapists working side by side. Each person chooses their own treatment and pressure — one might have deep tissue while the other has a relaxing massage — and the shared setting is the point: a way to unwind together, mark an anniversary or simply spend an hour in the same calm space.

It is offered mainly by spas and by agencies who can send two therapists to a home or hotel, and by pairs of independent therapists who work together regularly. The room is set up with two couches and the session usually opens with a short consultation for each of you.

Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes and are priced per person, sometimes with a small discount for booking together. Because two diaries need to align, book further ahead than you would for a single treatment, especially for weekends and around Valentine's Day and Christmas.

Where to find it in Liverpool

From Thursday the waterfront hotels around the Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE fill with visitors, and mobile bookings to hotels account for much of the week's work; by Monday the same therapists are quiet and easier to book at short notice. The centre is walkable end to end, so a therapist listing in the city centre can reach most hotels on foot and the distinction between areas matters less than in Manchester or Leeds. Aigburth and Woolton are genuinely residential, serving a local, repeat clientele with Swedish, hot stone and pregnancy treatments.

Frequently asked questions

Do we both have the same treatment?

Not necessarily. Each person chooses their own treatment and pressure, and the two therapists work independently. The only thing shared is the room and the timing.

Can a couples massage be done at home?

Yes, through an agency or a pair of mobile therapists, provided there is space for two couches. It is a popular option for anniversaries and for hotel stays.

How much does a couples massage cost?

Roughly double the single rate, so £90 to £150 for an hour for two outside London and £120 to £200 in the capital. Spas often package it with use of their facilities.
