What is remedial massage?
Remedial massage sits at the clinical end of the directory. It begins with an assessment: the therapist takes a history, looks at posture and movement, and tests the affected area before deciding what to treat and how. The treatment itself draws on deep tissue, trigger point work, myofascial release, stretching and joint mobilisation, chosen for the problem in front of them.
It is for a specific, named complaint — a frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, recurring lower back pain, whiplash recovery — rather than for general relaxation, and it usually comes with advice on stretching, posture or exercise to do between sessions.
Remedial therapists often work in clinics alongside physiotherapists and osteopaths, and hold Level 4 or 5 qualifications. Sessions are 45 to 60 minutes and a course of four to six is typical for an established problem. Some private health insurers will contribute towards remedial massage from a registered therapist.

What is the difference between remedial and deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue is a technique; remedial is an approach. A remedial session assesses a specific problem and uses whichever techniques fit, which may include deep tissue but also stretching, mobilisation and homework. It is closer to a physiotherapy appointment than to a spa treatment.
Can I claim remedial massage on health insurance?
Some UK policies cover it when the therapist is registered with a recognised body such as the CNHC or the Sports Massage Association. Check your policy and ask the therapist for a receipt with their registration number.
