What is deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm strokes and sustained pressure to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue around them. Where Swedish massage glides over the surface, deep tissue works into it, using forearms, elbows and knuckles as well as hands to release adhesions and chronic tension.
It is the treatment for tightness that does not respond to gentle work: a stiff neck from desk work, a lower back that seizes after driving, shoulders that have been set for years. Some discomfort during the session is normal and should sit at the edge of what feels productive, never beyond it; a good therapist will ask you to rate it and adjust.
Afterwards you may feel tender for a day or two, much like after exercise. Drinking water and taking a warm bath helps. Sessions are usually 60 or 90 minutes and it is common to book a course of three or four a few weeks apart for a long-standing problem.

Where to find it in Bristol
Ninety minutes is the standard booking rather than the upgrade, a noticeable share of therapists hold yoga, reiki or counselling qualifications alongside massage, and the consultation at the start of a first session tends to be longer. Clifton has the best-regarded and most expensive end, often in dedicated treatment rooms above the shops on Whiteladies Road, and it is the place to find shiatsu, lomi lomi and pregnancy specialists. Redland is its quieter residential neighbour; Harbourside covers the hotels and the mobile trade.

Frequently asked questions
Should deep tissue massage hurt?
It should feel intense but not painful. Discomfort at the point of pressure is expected; sharp pain, bracing or holding your breath means the pressure is too much. Say so and the therapist will ease off. Bruising afterwards is not a sign of a good treatment.
How is deep tissue different from sports massage?
Deep tissue addresses chronic tension anywhere in the body at a slow, steady pace. Sports massage is more targeted, works around a particular activity or injury, and includes stretching and mobilisation as well as pressure.
How often should I have deep tissue massage?
For an ongoing problem, every two to three weeks until it settles, then monthly for maintenance. For general tightness, once a month is plenty.
