What is thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage is performed on a firm mat on the floor, with the client in loose clothing and no oil. The therapist uses hands, thumbs, elbows, knees and feet to apply rhythmic compression along the body's energy lines (sen), and moves the client through a sequence of assisted yoga-like stretches. It is sometimes called lazy yoga for that reason.

The effect is different from oil massage: rather than relaxation through touch, it produces a sense of openness and mobility, particularly in the hips, hamstrings and spine. It suits people who feel stiff rather than knotted, who want to be stretched, or who prefer to stay clothed.

Sessions run 60, 90 or 120 minutes, and ninety is the traditional length. Thai massage is widely offered by Thai-trained therapists and dedicated studios in the larger cities; the Thai oil massage listed by some venues is a gentler hybrid closer to Swedish massage.

Where to find it in Birmingham

The NEC, the ICC and the airport hotels keep a steady demand for mobile treatments, and Solihull has become a sub-market of its own, with therapists who quote hotel visits as their default and whose availability tracks the exhibition schedule. The Jewellery Quarter has the longest-established independents, several in converted workshop units fitted out as proper treatment rooms, and it is the best area for remedial and sports work. Edgbaston is residential and quieter, favoured for longer afternoon treatments and for pregnancy massage, and Moseley has a strong holistic and aromatherapy presence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I keep my clothes on for Thai massage?

Yes. Wear or bring loose, comfortable clothing such as tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt; many studios provide a set. No oil is used in traditional Thai massage.

Is Thai massage painful?

It can be intense, especially the deeper stretches and thumb pressure, but it should never be painful. Tell the therapist about any injuries, joint problems or back conditions beforehand, and speak up during the session if a stretch is too much.

How much does Thai massage cost?

Around £40 to £65 an hour outside London and £55 to £90 in the capital. Dedicated Thai studios often price ninety minutes as the standard session.
